Young Cartoonist in Residence application information

Our first Young Cartoonist in Resident

In this page you will find information on how to apply for our Young Cartoonist in Residency Programme as well as what is involved in the programme. This has been kindly funded by John Lyon's Charity. In our first year of trialling the residency we were lucky enough to win the Museum and Heritage Award for Community Engagement Programme of the Year. This is a six month residency for Autistic young people between the ages of 15 and 25 who live or go to school in the boroughs of Brent, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, and Camden.

Residency aims:

  • Weekly cartooning/ drawing support with Steve Marchant, the museum's Learning Officer

  • Resident to work towards gaining Silver Arts Award

  • Mentor support with relevant industry professionals

  • Opportunities to create blogs and share thoughts about their experiences at the museum, using the museum's social media accounts

  • Learning about the structure of museums and potential museum career paths

  • Final works acquired by the museum for a fee

  • Works put on display in the museum for a minimum of 6 months

  • Support in turning final pieces into merchandise to be sold in the shop

  • £1000 to compensate the young person for their time

Info for schools:

If one of your students is chosen we will arrange with staff to find a good time for the resident to come to the museum each week. I will talk to relevant teachers to see if there’s any particular area of development the school would like the focus to be on. Steve has experience running workshops in a SEN/D environment. We can arrange for him to run a workshop at the school or have a museum visit free of charge to help the rest of the class understand cartooning and what their friend is up to.

We have funding to cover the TA’s cost to bring the resident to the museum once a week.

Application process:

We have funding in place to run the residence programme until March 2026.

If a student is suitable for the programme please send two pieces of cartoon art work (any style) along with their name, age and school / borough they live in.
You can either email them to outreach@cartoonmusem.org

or post them to:

 Amba

The Cartoon Museum
63 Wells Street
London
W1A 3AE

How the decision will be made:

A panel made up of museum staff will look at all entries and decide who would be the best fit for the programme. This will not be down to current art skills/ abilities and instead will be looking for which young person we feel would gain the most from being a Young Cartoonist in Residence.

More information:

You can email us at outreach@cartoonmusem.org. If a phone call would be useful please text/ phone: 02075808155. If I miss your call I will be in contact as soon as possible.

We will also be having a Q&A zoom meeting on February 21st at 4:30pm:
